This is the sort of rational, logical thought process that has me optimistic about 2009.

It's like I tell folks who know I'm an AU fan when they ask about this coming season. I tell them that we may not win every game, but I at least (for now) like the direction we are heading.WDEwghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13655896202379067512noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20559458.post-31917134649762162412009-07-23T04:51:11.747-04:002009-07-23T04:51:11.747-04:00I agree with Steve's comment, "If Auburn ...I agree with Steve's comment, "If Auburn has a QB, we beat them." But will add this: If we have an appropriate set of plays that capitalize on the strengths of the quarterbacks we have right now, we win this game and several others.

Kodi has strengths that can be used effectively to make life difficult for the defense. Put Kodi, Fannin, and Tate in the backfield, get some strong-running wide receivers that can catch a ball, and you have options.

Chris Brown, over at Smart Football, has reminded us of the old single wing's power to confuse defenses. A strong running quarterback like Kodi becomes an option among many to move the ball. The defense cannot load up the box without running the risk of over pursuing the wrong guy.

There are options, reverses, and short passes that will keep the defense honest.

Last year we tried a Leak/Tebow approach with Burns/Todd. When Florida played Leak/Tebow, they were too predictable. But Tebow was so strong it didn't matter, nobody could stop him even when they knew what was coming. Trouble for us was, we had neither Leak nor Tebow.

This year, we at least have a coaching staff who are all pulling for the success of "the system," whatever it might be. Malzahn is savvy enough to figure out he must build plays around what's on the field, and clever enough to come up with successful plays.

Last year we gave up too many yards with penalties. We actually moved backward for a series just on penalties alone. Ol blamed the two-point stance. Whatever. I think some of them (no names please, it's a new dawn, a new day...) were anticipating the snap and were leaning forward to get a good angle for take off, misjudged their timing and center of gravity did'em in.

Our kickers blooped kick offs, popped up high short punts, kicked out of bounds, missed field goals, extra points, and who knows what else that gave the bad guys good field position, shaved points, worsened the bleeding.

We fix the kicking game, address the strengths of the quarterbacks we have via appropriate plays, and stop injuring our players with intelligent conditioning and training practices. These do not seem to be insurmountable tasks.

We beat Tennessee this year.War Eagle AC-47https://www.blogger.com/profile/16209779615792197607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20559458.post-389128368165691352009-07-22T21:50:25.480-04:002009-07-22T21:50:25.480-04:00By the way, I think the game you discussed is the ...By the way, I think the game you discussed is the game where we had 3, count them, 3 QBs going into the game. What a wonderful problem to have? It was one of the worst played football games I think I have ever wished I hadn't saw. Call it a defensive struggle, but it is a game both teams should have lost.

If Auburn has a QB, we beat them.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16460464224141986657noreply@blogger.com
